From serving coffee to working as pool attendants, many of us can relate to starting off working random jobs before getting started on our careers. And celebrities are no different! They may be swimming in money and fame now, but you’d better believe some have had a number of jobs totally unrelated to their present occupation. With our experience in staffing and recruitment in Malta, we at JF Group thought we’d share a few celebrities who’ve had interesting career journeys.
1. Victoria Beckham
The fashionista went from wearing a sperm costume on roller skates for a BBC sex education show Body Matters, to singing in the pop group Spice Girls, to becoming a luxury fashion designer. Since launching her own denim line in 2006, Victoria Beckham has launched a cosmetics line, sunglasses and fragrances, and has won multiple awards for her designs. In 2012, she launched her contemporary line Victoria, by Victoria Beckham, making her the designer most searched-for on the internet in 2013, beating even huge names in the likes of Michael Kors and Ralph Lauren. Quite the contrast from being a roller-skating sperm!
2. Whoopi Goldberg
Known professionally as Whoopi Goldberg, the award-winning comedian, actress, activist and author was born Caryn Elaine Johnson. Her working life has been as vast as it gets, going from bricklayer to a morgue beautician, well before winning an Oscar for her role in Ghost. The Hollywood actress is probably best known for her role in the enormously popular Sister Act, and The Colour Purple – for which she received multiple Golden Globe nominations and Academy Awards. She has also moderated her own TV shows and more recently, launched her own medical marijuana start-up to offer pain relief to women who suffer from menstrual issues. How’s that for a varied career!
3. Arnold Schwarzenegger
A quick Google search will provide you with a number of job descriptions for Schwarzenegger: businessman, investor, filmmaker, politician, former professional bodybuilder and power lifter, author, and philanthropist. Indeed, the Austrian-born actor has had quite the journey. From a young age, he was active in sports, practising boxing, swimming, and a number of team sports including football. In need of money, he later mopped floors and started his own mail order business, selling training supplies. Then, the long-time athlete got into competitive bodybuilding, for which he won many titles, namely ‘Mr. Europe’.
Not one to rest on his laurels, the ambitious Schwarzenegger made his film debut playing Hercules in Hercules in New York (1970) and took acting lessons, and has since appeared in a number of films, most notably The Terminator. He has studied psychology, acquired his BS in business and international economics, and if that weren’t enough, Schwarzenegger became governor of California in 2003. He is one of those celebrities who shows that anything can be done if you set your heart to it!
